Migraines

In medical terms, a headache is defined as a pain or discomfort in the head, scalp, or neck, often resulting from tension, stress, or various other triggers. Migraines, on the other hand, are a more severe form of headache characterized by intense, throbbing pain usually on one side of the head. Migraines can be accompanied by additional symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. The precise cause of migraines involves genetic and environmental factors, leading to abnormalities in the way the brain processes pain. Neurovascular theories suggest that migraines result from mechanisms involving blood vessels and nerves. Although not completely understood, it is believed that certain triggers, such as hormonal changes, dietary factors, or sensory stimuli, can provoke an episode.

The ten most common symptoms associated with migraines include throbbing or pounding headache pain, nausea, vomiting, heightened sensitivity to light (photophobia), increased sensitivity to sound (phonophobia), blurred vision, lightheadedness, aura or visual disturbances (such as seeing flashing lights), fatigue, and irritability. These symptoms can vary in intensity and may significantly affect daily activities, leading to compromised work performance, social withdrawal, and reduced quality of life. Understanding and managing these symptoms typically involves a comprehensive approach including trigger avoidance, pharmacological intervention, and lifestyle modifications, helping to minimize the frequency and intensity of migraine episodes.

Living with migraines can lead to an unfocused, chaotic and under performing brain can leave you feeling helpless and overwhelmed. Life doesn’t have to be so difficult.
