Spectrum Disorder
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental condition that affects how an individual perceives and interacts with the world. It is characterized by challenges in social communication and interaction, as well as restricted or repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. Medically, ASD is understood as a neurodevelopmental disorder that emerges in early childhood and persists throughout a person's life. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), classifies ASD on a spectrum, recognizing that the symptoms and their severity can vastly differ among individuals. The underlying causes are believed to be multifactorial, involving genetic predispositions combined with environmental influences that affect brain development and function.
The ten most common symptoms associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder include difficulties with verbal and non-verbal communication, impaired social interactions, limited eye contact, challenges in developing and maintaining relationships, insistence on sameness and rigidity in routines, intense focus or fixations on specific subjects or activities, difficulty understanding others' perspectives or emotions, unusual reactions to sensory experiences (such as noises, textures, or lights), repetitive movements or speech patterns (such as hand-flapping or echolalia), and variations in learning, attention, or executive functioning. These symptoms significantly impact daily functioning and can vary dramatically from one individual to another, requiring individualized support and interventions to enhance development, communication, and quality of life.
Living with a spectrum disorder can lead to an unfocused, chaotic and under performing brain can leave you feeling helpless and overwhelmed. Life doesn’t have to be so difficult.
